# Vast Horizons — The Chaos of Montpellier-le-Vieux On the Causse Noir plateau, northeast of Millau, the chaos of Montpellier-le-Vieux forms a stone landscape on an unusual scale. Renamed Cité de Pierres in 2019, this vast collection of ruin-like landforms extends over roughly 120 hectares in the commune of La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite, in Aveyron. Here, the plateau’s dolomitic limestone has been shaped into a profusion of rocks with singular outlines. The eye moves between mineral masses, passages and silhouettes that everyone can interpret in their own way. The site is bordered to the south by the Dourbie gorges, a proximity that places this rocky city within the great landscapes of the Grands Causses. ## Why make the detour The chaos of Montpellier-le-Vieux is not merely a viewpoint or an isolated rock. It is a true mineral labyrinth, where the force of time upon dolomitic rock becomes tangible. The ruin-like formations create the impression of an ancient city left in the open air, made up of towers, ridges and monumental blocks. The place also has a history of names. It was once called *Lo clapàs vièlh*, a Rouergat expression meaning “the old pile of stones.” Following its exploration by Édouard Martel in 1883 and 1884, it took the name Montpellier-le-Vieux. “Lo Clapàs” was then the nickname Montpellier residents gave their city, referring to its old centre of limestone buildings. Listed as a natural site and incorporated into the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park, the chaos is one of the most striking rocky landscapes in the Millau area. ## The best time to visit The experience depends greatly on the weather and visibility across the plateau. A clear day offers a better sense of the landscape’s scale, the rocks’ volumes and the site’s position above the Dourbie gorges. As conditions can vary with the seasons, it is best to consult the site’s official information before planning a visit, particularly regarding visiting arrangements and trail conditions. ## Preparing your visit The terrain is naturally rocky and uneven, so footwear suitable for walking is a sensible choice. Bringing water and protection against the weather is also useful, as the landscape is largely exposed. The site’s protected status calls for a considerate visit: staying on designated routes, not moving stones and preserving the tranquillity of this natural environment are all part of the experience. ## Access and landmarks The chaos of Montpellier-le-Vieux, now also known as Cité de Pierres, lies on the Causse Noir plateau in La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite, in Aveyron. It is located northeast of Millau and the Millau Viaduct, with the Dourbie gorges to the south. To reach the site and find up-to-date visiting arrangements, it is advisable to check the official guidance before setting off.
