# Facing the Vast — Solutré Rock West of Mâcon, above Solutré-Pouilly, Solutré Rock asserts its limestone silhouette in the wine-growing landscape of southern Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This solitary escarpment, protected as a listed site and recognised as a Grand Site de France, rises to 493 metres. It overlooks the vineyards of the Mâconnais with a striking presence: a pale cliff face, a ridgeline and, all around, a vast horizon. The site is more than simply a beautiful viewpoint. Solutré Rock is at once a geological phenomenon rare in this region, a major prehistoric site and a cultural landmark of Saône-et-Loire. Its name gave rise to that of the Solutrean, a Palaeolithic culture. Human occupation has been attested here for at least 55,000 years. ## Why make the detour The power of Solutré Rock lies in its contrast with the surrounding hills and vineyards. It rises above the terroir of Pouilly-Fuissé, of which it forms one of the emblematic landscapes. Here, the eye takes in the vine-covered slopes of the Mâconnais, while the rock evokes the territory’s far more ancient history. At the summit, the calcareous grasslands of the Mâconnais form a distinctive natural environment, home to specific fauna and flora. This combination of limestone cliff, dry grassland vegetation, vineyards and prehistoric remains gives the site a rare density. The Rock has also left its mark on recent political history: from the 1980s onwards, François Mitterrand’s annual ascent, accompanied by many friends, helped bring it to national attention. ## The best time Periods when the light brings out the contours of the rock and the patchwork of vineyards offer a particularly powerful reading of the landscape. The site also deserves unhurried attention: its silhouette, visible from the surrounding area, changes character with the sky and the seasons. Visiting conditions and recommendations related to the protection of the natural environment may change. Before setting out, it is advisable to consult the official information from the Grand Site de France. ## Planning your visit Solutré Rock is a protected natural and heritage site. It is best explored discreetly, respecting the marked paths and the calcareous grasslands that constitute one of its principal points of interest. The site is equally suited to a scenic stop and to a closer exploration of its history: geology, prehistory and wine-growing culture meet within a compact area. Taking the time to observe the rock from the surrounding area also makes it possible to appreciate its commanding position at the heart of the vineyard landscape. ## Access and reference points Solutré Rock lies in the commune of Solutré-Pouilly, in Saône-et-Loire, around 8 kilometres west of Mâcon, in southern Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. A major visual landmark of the Mâconnais, it is part of the landscape of the local wine appellations, notably Pouilly-Fuissé. For access arrangements, recommended routes and any measures in place on site, consult the site’s official information before visiting.
