Cologne Cathedral: the Gothic vertical that dominates the Rhine In Cologne, you do not really need to look for the cathedral: its two towers rise above the city, right next to the central station. The Kölner Dom, officially the High Cathedral Church of St. Peter, is the Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Cologne and one of Germany’s foremost architectural landmarks. At 157 metres tall, it is the country’s second-highest church. Between 1880 and 1884, it was even the tallest structure in the world, before being surpassed by the Washington Monument. Cologne draws a very large number of visitors around this monument: 5 million people were recorded in 2001, followed by 6 million in 2004. For a more unhurried visit, it is a good idea to choose a time when you can linger over the details of the façade and the views from the neighbouring squares. Access and landmarks The cathedral is located in the heart of Cologne, right beside the current central station. It stands near the Altstadt, the Hohenzollern Bridge, the Ludwig Museum and the Romano-Germanic Museum, around 250 metres from the Rhine. Its location follows the city’s former northern Roman boundary. Arriving from the station or the Rhine quays, the towers provide an immediate landmark: a monumental Gothic presence amid Cologne’s infrastructure and contemporary buildings.
